Indians Spent 12,226 Crore On Films In 2023

The Indian box office saw a fair few blockbusters last year with the likes of Jawan, Pathan, Salaar, Jailer, Gadar 2, Leo, and others putting up big numbers at the ticket counters. Now, reputed media agency Ormax has issued a new report, stating that 2023 is statistically the best year ever for Indian cinema.

According to this Ormax report, the box office collections in India is at an all-time high with Rs12,226 crore in theatrical revenue in 2023. Meaning, Indians spent a whopping Rs 12,226 crores on films in 2023.

Ormax has reported language-wise box office returns for 2023 and here is a look into it.

Hindi – 5,380 crore
Telugu – 2,265 crore
Tamil – 1,961 crore
English – 1,139 crore

Top 5 films

Jawan – 734 crore
Animal – 645 crore
Pathaan – 636 crore
Gadar 2 – 619 crore
Salaar – 512 crore

Telugu cinema has clocked marginally higher revenues than Tamil cinema according to the statistics. In Tamil, Jailer and Leo itself account for over Rs 1000 crore revenues. All other films appear to have made only minor contributions.

Bollywood had a blockbuster year with the likes of Jawan, Pathan, and Animal running riot at the box office.

Tollywood has already started 2024 on a bright note with blockbuster HanuMan and underdelivering but high-grossing Guntur Kaaram. With Devara, Pushpa 2, and Prabhas’s Kalki lined up, Tollywood could very well cross the Rs 3000 crore mark this year.
