The upcoming period drama Kaantha, produced by Rana Daggubati and starring Dulquer Salmaan, has been postponed from its original release date of 12 September. The delay is due to post-production issues and competition from other films like Mirai and Kishkindhapuri.
Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, Kaantha also stars Bhagyashri Borse in the lead role. The team is now waiting to finalise a new release date.
The film’s teaser generated curiosity with its unique concept. Industry sources speculate that Kaantha is inspired by the life of a real historical figure, adding further intrigue to the project.
Reportedly, the story is based on M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, often referred to as Kollywood’s first superstar. Known as MKT, he started as a singer in 1920, later becoming a popular stage artist, and made his film debut in 1934.
Though he acted in only 14 films over 26 years, 10 of them were massive hits. His film Haridas ran continuously in Chennai theatres for three years, a record at the time.
MKT’s life took a tragic turn when he was imprisoned in connection with the murder of journalist Lakshmikanthan. He was later released due to lack of evidence but passed away in 1959 due to poor health.
With a life story full of highs and lows, MKT remains a compelling figure for filmmakers. Kaantha is said to draw from this powerful real-life narrative.
Interestingly, a web series titled The Madras Mystery is also in the works for Sony Liv. Featuring Nazriya in a lead role, it is expected to explore a similar storyline. It is yet to be seen whether both projects will offer the same interpretation or tell different versions of the story.
Audiences will have to wait a little longer to uncover the mystery behind Kaantha.
