Some films essentially turn visual narratives because of the adeptness of the cinematographer. The tones of various shades, the vibriant hues of scenes and the depiction on canvas speaks oodles non-verbally. Cinematographer Rathnavelu aka Randy is one such technician who with his camera eye translates the version of the story writer and film maker into different frames which convey the obvious happenings on screen.
For the prestigious project ‘Lingaa’, Rathnavelu decided to keep his directorial venture aside for a while since he doesn’t want to miss a chance to work with a man of humility, Rajnikanth who always surprises the ace cinematographer with his utter dedication for the craft and his trust on the technicians Rajni is working with.
Since the film’s story is going to travel in two eras; one set in the pre-independence era and the second one set in the 1990’s era, it is like a challenge to Randy to catch the visuals with the right colour and shades that bring about the differences between the two eras. He further clears that he didn’t choose black & white, de-saturated or sepia hue for the pre-independence era because he thinks the positivity needs vibrancy.
Shooting wrapping up in five months shows the pace in which the film’s canning was completed. It had been a challenge for him to work under extreme climatic conditions with dark clouds, rains, cold weather and lack of proper sunlight and sometimes too much sun shine effecting the visuals. There had been one particular schedule for 31 days out of which it was raining for 17 days.
Rathnavelu today is regarded for his style and substance as well. His frames speak and elevate the drama to unfold. The presence of this gifted technician itself adds value to the movie’s visual brilliance and if it is a challenging film like ‘Lingaa’ set in two different backdrops then one can look forward to marvel at his taking and camera’s perception. December 12 is fast approaching and Randy alongwith Rajnikanth is going to leave the audience in awe of the movie.
