Sankranthi Revives Local vs. Dubbing Debate

Sankranthi MoviesThe box office battle for Sankranthi 2024 is intensifying with each passing moment. While Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram is the biggest of the lot in terms of budget, cast, and hype, there are other exciting films as well.

Prashant Varma’s Hanuman, Nagarjuna’s Naa Saami Ranga, Vijay Deverakonda’s film with Parasuram, and Ravi Teja’s Eagle will fight it out at the box office along with Guntur Kaaram during the festive season in January 2024.

Now, another film has jumped into the race. Sivakarthikeyan’s much-delayed science-fiction project Ayalaan. As per the makers, the film got delayed due to heavy VFX work and is now targeting Pongal 2024.

But the big question is how a dubbed film will get screens and shows given the already overcrowded Sankranthi 2024 lineup dominated by Telugu films. It’s uncertain how a dubbed film like “Ayalaan” will secure screens and showtimes. Even Telugu films will struggle to get screens and shows if all films stick to their plan.

Accommodating a dubbed film like “Ayalaan” poses a huge challenge to distributors and exhibitors, just like last year when Vijay’s dubbed film Varisu/Vaarasudu created quite a mayhem for the Telugu releases Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy, grabbing many good screens and show timings.

If Ayalaan manages to secure screens, it will compete with multiple releases, potentially impacting the box office collections of both the dubbed film and Telugu movies, as some theaters would be allocated to “Ayalaan.”

Let’s hope better sense prevails and one or two films get pushed to another date.
