As Empuraan prepares for its big-screen debut on March 27, there is a growing buzz about its expansion into Hindi markets. Initially, there were doubts about whether the film would secure a release in national multiplex chains. However, with PVR actively promoting it, the outlook has significantly changed.
This suggests that the makers have agreed to a 56-day (8-week) OTT window. Many South Indian biggies like Vijay’s GOAT and Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan refused this clause. As a result, they were rejected by multiplex chains.
By securing backing from PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, L2: Empuraan is set for a nationwide multiplex release. This is rare for a Malayalam film.
The move also indicates that the makers are confident about the film’s box office potential. They are not in a hurry for an OTT premiere. The film carries a grand vision as the biggest Malayalam film ever. It has record-breaking pre-sales and a 100+ crore budget.
National multiplex chains are on board, and demand in Hindi markets is also decent. Empuraan is poised to set new benchmarks for Mollywood. The final OTT deal is yet to be sealed.
However, reports indicate that JioHotstar is in the race to acquire its OTT rights. The film is expected to secure the highest-ever OTT price for a Malayalam film. If this happens, Empuraan could become a game-changer for Malayalam cinema on a pan-Indian level, in terms of box office and also OTT deal!
