If industry reports are true, Prabhas’ upcoming period drama Fauzi will have Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the Azad Hind Fauj as the historical backbone of its story. While the scale and star power are much bigger this time, Telugu cinema’s recent track record with Netaji-related films isn’t exactly encouraging.
Nikhil Siddhartha’s Spy attempted to build a fictional thriller around Netaji’s mysterious legacy. Despite an interesting premise, the film failed to impress audiences due to weak execution and ended up as a box office washout.
Kalyan Ram’s Devil also incorporated Netaji into its narrative. The period spy thriller revolved around a British conspiracy involving the freedom fighter, but the film turned out to be a big disaster.
Now, Prabhas and director Hanu Raghavapudi are trying a different approach. According to industry sources, Fauzi follows a British Indian Army soldier who joins the Azad Hind Fauj and fights for India’s independence under Netaji’s leadership. The legendary leader reportedly serves as the emotional and historical backbone of the story rather than its central protagonist.
The biggest advantage for Fauzi is its scale. Unlike Spy and Devil, Hanu Raghavapudi is said to be mounting the film as a grand period action-war drama with strong emotional storytelling on a budget of more than Rs. 500 crores. Prabhas’ pan-India appeal also gives the project far greater reach than Spy or Devil.
However, portraying a towering historical figure like Netaji comes with immense responsibility. Audiences today expect peak nationalist emotions, authenticity, emotional depth, and historical sensitivity. If Fauzi gets those aspects right, it could succeed where Spy and Devil failed.
Prabhas has failed to revive several genres in recent times, such as period romance with Radhe Shyam and horror fantasy with The Raja Saab. Whether Prabhas can now break the jinx surrounding Netaji-based stories in Telugu cinema will be one of the most interesting aspects to watch when Fauzi finally hits the big screens on December 3.
