After KGF, a particular template became extremely popular in Indian cinema, especially in Telugu. An oppressed community, an unknown world, a ruthless villain, mountains of bloodshed, a hero with an emotional bond with his mother challenging an entire empire, and plenty of elevation scenes became the new formula for creating a pan-India spectacle.
Many filmmakers tried their own versions with different levels of success. But none managed to create the same impact as Prashanth Neel. The problem now is that the template itself has crossed its saturation point.
The Paradise is the latest example. Srikanth Odela has created his own version of that world, with an oppressed community, a brutal environment, violence, larger-than-life characters and constant hero elevation. The film has its moments, but the formula no longer has the same freshness. What once felt raw and exciting is now starting to feel repetitive, tiring and exhausting when the story does not offer something substantially new.
This is where Tollywood needs to be careful. World-building is not a genre by itself. Bloodshed is not automatically intensity. And hero elevation cannot replace strong writing.
That makes Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali particularly interesting. Rahul Sankrityan is attempting another period action drama with a large world, a British-era backdrop and plenty of violence. Going by the teaser, the film has some extremely brutal sequences, including dismemberment during the war against the British, similar to The Paradise.
The real challenge is not how much blood the film can show. It is whether Rahul can use this setting and violence to create something that feels fresh rather than exhausting the audience in theatres.
The audience has already seen this formula many times. The next big pan-India film does not necessarily need a bigger world, more blood or louder elevations. It needs a better reason for that world, violence and elevation to exist in the first place.
Let’s hope Ranabaali avoids the mistakes of The Paradise.
