Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is preparing to return to the Sarkar franchise nearly nine years after the previous instalment. The upcoming film Sarkar 4 is expected to bring back Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, recreating their well known on screen partnership.
According to reports, Sarkar 4 may begin production from April 25. The project is widely being viewed as an important film for Ram Gopal Varma, with many observers calling it a possible comeback opportunity for the director.
The Sarkar franchise remains one of Varma’s most recognised works. The first film Sarkar released in 2005 and introduced the character Subhash Nagre, played by Amitabh Bachchan. The story explored power and influence within Mumbai’s political landscape.
The success of the original film led to Sarkar Raj, which expanded the narrative further. In that sequel, Abhishek Bachchan’s role gained greater importance. The film continued to build the intense political drama that defined the series.
The third film Sarkar 3 was released several years later. After that instalment, many fans wondered whether the franchise would return again. The announcement of Sarkar 4 has therefore renewed curiosity among viewers.
At the same time, audiences are closely watching whether the film can mark a comeback for Ram Gopal Varma. Earlier in his career, he directed widely praised films such as Satya, Rangeela, Company and Sarkar. These projects helped establish his reputation in Indian cinema.
However, over time his filmography saw a steady decline. Some later projects were criticised heavily and even described by critics as B grade or C grade productions. This shift affected his standing within the film industry.
Because of this history, some viewers believe a strong comeback may be difficult for the director. Others remain hopeful that Sarkar 4 could revive his reputation if the film delivers a compelling story and powerful performances.
The pairing of Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan also carries nostalgia for many fans. In the early 2000s, the duo created excitement through films like Bunty Aur Babli and their collaborations in the Sarkar series.
However, some observers feel the same level of excitement may be harder to recreate today. As a result, Sarkar 4 faces challenges both as a franchise revival and as a potential comeback project for Ram Gopal Varma.
Despite these doubts, a section of fans still hopes the film will surprise audiences. If the project succeeds, it could revive interest in the franchise and restore confidence in the director’s filmmaking abilities.
