There was a time when Telugu filmmakers were extremely careful about how villains treated the hero. Even if the story demanded it, directors and producers often avoided showing the hero being humiliated, brutally beaten, or seriously injured. The reason was simple: fan backlash.
Filmmakers knew hardcore fans would not easily accept their favorite hero being treated badly on screen. Villains could threaten the hero, fight him, and create problems, but there were clear limits.
That seems to be changing now.
In recent Telugu films, villains are being allowed to go much further. Heroes are being brutally beaten, humiliated, injured, and pushed into extreme situations. In some cases, characters lose limbs, become disabled, or even watch their loved ones get killed in front of them.
What is interesting is that audiences are accepting these scenes instead of immediately turning against the filmmakers.
In fact, the more shocking the treatment of the hero, the more discussion it can create. When a villain completely overpowers a popular hero, that scene can become one of the biggest talking points of the film.
This also shows how Telugu audiences have changed. OTT platforms have exposed viewers to cinema from across India and the world. Audiences are now more comfortable with stories where even the biggest stars can be brutally attacked, defeated, or placed in vulnerable situations. The hero is no longer completely untouchable or invincible.
This change also gives writers more freedom. A hero who is constantly protected from danger can eventually feel predictable. But when audiences see him at his weakest, his eventual comeback can carry far greater impact.
Of course, filmmakers cannot simply shock audiences for the sake of it. The violence and humiliation still need to serve the story. If they feel forced, the same scenes can backfire.
Still, this could be one of the biggest changes in Telugu commercial cinema. Earlier, filmmakers protected heroes from villains because they feared the fans. Now, filmmakers seem increasingly willing to let villains cross every limit.
And surprisingly, audiences are not getting angry. They are enjoying the shock, discussing it online, and waiting to see how the hero fights back.
