IMAX screens are expected to play a major role for big films this year. Toxic is reportedly among the titles under discussion. However, nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Talks are said to be ongoing between the concerned parties.
The buzz increased after IMAX released its Investor Relations Presentation on Wednesday, February 25. Toxic reportedly appeared in the list of local language films. Ramayana Part 1 was also mentioned in the same list, according to Variety India.
However, a disclaimer in the presentation left many disappointed. It clearly stated that the titles listed are not confirmed for release in the IMAX network across selected markets. Despite this, a source claimed that Toxic producers had early discussions about an IMAX release.
IMAX is currently looking to expand its collaborations in India. The goal is to increase the number of Indian films made for premium theatres. The format earned nearly $405 million at the local box office worldwide last year.
Bollywood Hungama reported that 75 local films are scheduled for IMAX release this year. The company is also targeting earnings of $1.4 billion from its global screens. Some OTT releases may also receive limited IMAX screenings.
While the development has created excitement around upcoming films, concerns remain. Many people pointed out the limited number of IMAX screens in India. They argued that access remains restricted for a large section of the audience.
Some viewers even urged filmmakers not to create early buzz about IMAX plans. They suggested that producers should work with authorities to expand IMAX infrastructure. This, they believe, will help attract more audiences in the long run.
Meanwhile, trade experts are closely watching the situation. They are keen to see whether an IMAX release can improve box office performance. The coming months will reveal whether the format helps films avoid flop or disaster tags.
