F1 Beats Avatar but Indian Films Rule IMAX in 2025

Indian box office 2025 record performance

The year 2025 turned out to be one of the strongest and most diverse box office seasons in India. Both Indian and Hollywood films performed well across premium and regular screens. The Indian box office crossed an estimated ₹13,395 crore. As many as 37 films earned over ₹100 crore, compared to 22 in 2024.

IMAX screens played a major role in this surge. F1 emerged as the highest-grossing IMAX film in India, earning nearly 3.88 million USD or about ₹35.5 crore. It narrowly surpassed Avatar: Fire and Ash, which collected around 2.5 million USD from IMAX screens.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning also posted solid IMAX numbers. The rerelease of Interstellar performed strongly, earning roughly 1.74 million USD. Christopher Nolan’s film benefited from loyal fan interest and the appeal of premium theatrical viewing.

Indian films also delivered impressive IMAX performances. Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 became the top Indian IMAX grosser with earnings of about 1.67 million USD. Chhaava also entered the IMAX top ten, proving Indian stories can succeed in premium formats.

Beyond IMAX, Indian cinema dominated overall collections. Kantara: Chapter 1 and Chhaava emerged as the highest-grossing Indian films of the year, nearing ₹700 crore. Animated film Mahavatar Narsimha also performed well, earning around ₹300 crore at the box office.

Hollywood titles continued to attract Indian audiences. Avatar: Fire and Ash remained a strong international performer with high overall collections. While its IMAX earnings were lower than expected, its total box office reinforced global franchise appeal.

The year reflected a balance between spectacle and storytelling. Rereleased films like Interstellar showed the value of strong narratives and nostalgia. At the same time, some Hollywood releases underperformed in IMAX, raising questions about spectacle driven cinema.

Overall, 2025 highlighted the resilience of India’s theatrical market. Strong local content, steady international interest, and audience enthusiasm for cinemas defined the year. The box office showed renewed confidence and long-term growth potential.

Separately, Delta Air Lines cancelled several flights across five U.S. states as a powerful winter storm moved eastward. Heavy snow and ice caused dangerous travel conditions, leading to widespread disruptions and safety concerns.
