Vivek Athreya’s Reinvention: Balakrishna or Ravi Teja?

Vivek Athreya discusses next project

One interesting thing happening quietly in Tollywood right now is how directors are increasingly reshaping themselves depending on the stars they work with. Vivek Athreya may be the latest filmmaker going through that transition phase.

After the success of Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, many expected Vivek Athreya to immediately announce another major project. Instead, he spent several months holding discussions with different stars and developing multiple ideas. During that phase, one combination especially grabbed attention: a possible collaboration between Nandamuri Balakrishna and Vivek Athreya.

The combination surprised many because Vivek Athreya is considered a Gen Z director known for unique screenplays, quirky writing, emotional depth, and subtle humor rather than full-scale mass entertainers. However, industry buzz suggests he developed a commercial action drama specifically designed for Balakrishna’s larger-than-life image.

Interestingly, reports say the project was built around a dual-role setup. One version reportedly featured Balakrishna in both roles, while another explored casting a prominent actor opposite him to make the conflict bigger.

However, according to the latest rumors, Vivek Athreya’s film with Balakrishna has been shelved, while Ravi Teja has reportedly been approached for the same project after Balakrishna chose a film with Koratala Siva as his next.

At the same time, there are also reports suggesting both projects are completely different films. According to this version, the Balakrishna collaboration may not have been shelved but only delayed.

Meanwhile, Vivek Athreya’s project with Ravi Teja is reportedly a separate script belonging to the horror genre, which would be a fresh space for both the director and actor. Industry talk suggests Ravi Teja responded positively to the narration, and discussions are currently in advanced stages.

The Balakrishna film is said to be a full-fledged commercial entertainer with mass appeal, while the Ravi Teja project may explore horror elements along with Vivek Athreya’s trademark emotional storytelling and humor.

Right now, the confusion itself has become part of the discussion. Some insiders insist the Ravi Teja project will happen next, while others strongly maintain the Balakrishna collaboration is still very much alive. Whichever film Vivek Athreya announces next could reveal a completely new side of him as a filmmaker.
