Biggest Superstar’s Biggest Disaster: Zero Share, No OTT

Mohanlal in Vrusshabha fantasy action film

Mohanlal’s fantasy action drama Vrusshabha, directed by Nanda Kishore, released in theatres on December 25th. The film received disastrous responses from both audiences and critics. Negative word of mouth affected its theatrical run from the opening day itself.

Due to the poor reception, theatre footfalls dropped sharply across regions. Trade experts state that Vrusshabha has completely crashed at the box office. Reportedly, the producer earned nothing as the theatrical share of the film is said to be zero.

Despite being a star-led project, the film has failed to attract OTT buyers. No streaming platform has shown interest in acquiring the rights so far. Even if a deal happens later, it is expected to be on a pay per view basis.

The year 2025 was largely positive for Mohanlal with two box office blockbusters, L2 Empuraan and Thudarum. He also earned critical praise for Hridayapoorvam. However, the year ended on a disappointing note due to Vrusshabha’s failure.

The shooting of the film began in 2023 but faced multiple delays before release. It was mounted as a Pan Indian project with a reported budget of 120 crores. Despite this scale, worldwide collections are extremely poor.

As per reports, the film has managed to collect only 1.85 crores globally so far. The weak performance has raised serious concerns within the trade. Expectations were high, but the results have fallen far short.

Overall, Vrusshabha is emerging as a black mark in Mohanlal’s career. The film’s failure has surprised many in the industry. It now remains to be seen how the veteran actor plans his comeback after this setback.
