Kannada superstar Yash is gearing up for one of the biggest releases of his career with Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups, a period gangster drama directed by Geethu Mohandas. The film is planning to have a huge release, especially in the US market. Now, trade details about its breakeven target have come out, and the numbers are massive.
According to trade analysts, Toxic needs to collect around $6.5 million in North America across all languages to reach breakeven. This is the highest target Yash has faced in his career so far. The deal is reportedly structured in a refundable model. That means if Toxic fails to recover the required amount, the deficit can be adjusted against profits from another film backed by the same producers.
When compared to other recent Indian releases, this target is significantly high. Toxic is on par with Ram Charan’s Peddi, which also reportedly has a $6.5 million target. However, it is below Prabhas’ Raja Saab, which reportedly had around $8 million breakeven goal.
What makes the situation more challenging is the comparison with Yash’s own blockbuster KGF Chapter 2. That film collected around $7.5 million in North America in 2022.
KGF Chapter 2 had immense hype and was a solo release, whereas the hype for Toxic is not even half of that and it is releasing against Dhurandhar 2, which is easily the most hyped film among Indian audiences right now. Toxic is nowhere near it in terms of buzz.
The latest teaser also failed to meet expectations, as it looked like a mix of KGF and Marco with nothing new. Toxic collecting more than KGF Chapter 2 while clashing with a box office juggernaut like Dhurandhar 2 looks extremely tough. Dhurandhar first part collected more than 20 million dollars in the United States, which is historic. The sequel has crazy hype, and Toxic surviving against such a giant will be keenly watched. Many believe Yash and his team are overestimating Toxic and underestimating Dhurandhar 2 which is absolutely senseless.
For Toxic to cross the $6.5 million target while facing such heavy competition will be an extremely tough task. The stakes are sky high. Whether Yash can repeat or surpass his KGF Chapter 2 performance in the US under these conditions will be closely watched by the trade and fans alike.
