Yash Raj Films is betting big this year with two major Spyverse releases—War 2english and Alpha. War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, will release on 14th August, while Alpha, led by Alia Bhatt, is scheduled for Christmas Day. While both movies have sparked curiosity, they haven’t quite replicated the madness of earlier Spyverse blockbusters like Ek Tha Tiger, Pathaan, or War.
Trade experts believe the shift is due to changing audience behavior. Earlier, it was the mega star power of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Hrithik Roshan that drove people to theatres. Storylines were secondary to celebrity presence. But the equation has changed. Audiences now demand gripping plots, not just familiar faces.
The underwhelming response to films like Sikandar shows that even major stars can’t draw crowds without strong scripts. Fans skipped the film, showing that Salman Khan’s name alone wasn’t enough. This reflects a broader shift in expectations, putting pressure on studios to invest in substance over spectacle.
That’s why Alpha will be a make-or-break moment for the Spyverse. Alia Bhatt is a top actress, but she doesn’t have the kind of mass draw that Salman or SRK enjoy. If Alpha works, it will prove the Spyverse can succeed on narrative strength. If not, it signals that YRF is still over-relying on stardom.
Ultimately, both War 2 and Alpha will reveal whether YRF’s Spyverse is evolving with the times or still stuck in its old formula. The results could define the franchise’s future.
