Amaravati could get railway connectivity by late 2028 or early 2029 through a 57-km railway line estimated to cost ₹2,047 crore. The proposed route will connect Errupalem in Telangana’s Khammam district with Namburu near Guntur, passing through the Amaravati capital region.
The Railway Department has divided the project into four packages. Tendering has progressed for the first three packages, while bids have been invited for the fourth. Construction is expected to take around two years, depending on land acquisition and necessary approvals.
The first package covers the railway line between Errupalem and Peddapuram. The second package extends towards the Krishna River and requires approximately 152.40 hectares of land. The third package includes a railway bridge across the river and a connecting line towards Vaddamanu.
The fourth package covers a 28.35-km stretch from Vaddamanu to Namburu, largely passing through the capital region. The estimated cost is ₹599.33 crore, and the deadline for submitting bids is November 23, 2026. The Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) is coordinating land acquisition in areas including Tadikonda and Koppuravuru.
The proposed railway route includes stations at Errupalem, Peddapuram, Chennaravupalem, Gottimukala, Paritala, Kothapeta, Vaddamanu, Amaravati, Tadikonda, Koppuravuru and Namburu. The project also includes plans for electrification, modern signalling systems and passenger facilities to support railway operations.
The project received approval in 2018, but progress slowed in the following years. After the TDP-led coalition returned to power in 2024, the state government renewed discussions with the Railways. The revised plan proposes a single railway track instead of the double track initially considered.
Land acquisition remains one of the main challenges, particularly in areas where the railway line runs alongside the proposed Inner Ring Road. Some farmers have expressed concerns about compensation and the location of returnable plots. These concerns are particularly significant for those with smaller landholdings.
A proposed goods terminal at Paritala could help improve freight transportation in the region. The new railway line is also expected to strengthen connectivity between Amaravati, Vijayawada, Guntur and surrounding towns, providing additional transport options for passengers and businesses.
However, the proposed completion timeline of late 2028 or early 2029 is yet to be officially confirmed. Progress will depend on the completion of tendering, land acquisition and other required approvals. These factors will determine when Amaravati receives its new railway connection.
