Can Janasena Gets Opposition Status?

Janasena Gets Opposition Status

The discussion around who will get the status of opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly is indeed intriguing. According to parliamentary traditions and rules, a party needs to secure at least ten percent of the total seats in the Legislative Assembly or Lok Sabha to be granted opposition status.

In the current scenario, the Janasena Party contested and won 21 seats, which meets the 10 percent threshold in the 175-member Assembly. However, Janasena is a partner in the governing coalition, which disqualifies it from holding opposition status.

The rules stipulate that only a party not involved in the government can attain opposition status, leaving Janasena ineligible despite meeting the seat requirement. Given these circumstances, the 16th AP Legislative Assembly will lack a party with formal opposition status unless the Speaker uses discretionary powers to bestow this status on a party that does not meet the ten percent seat requirement.

The Speaker has the authority to make such decisions, potentially considering parties that did not contest as part of an alliance or did not secure the required consent from their alliance partners.

Thus, with the current political alignment, neither YSRCP nor Janasena will get the opposition status. This unusual situation might see YSRCP operating as a de facto opposition party despite not officially holding that status.
