Chandrababu Naidu Seeks to Regain Trust Through Aid

The first two days of the Krishna River floods (August 31st and September 1st) were chaotic, as Vijayawada was hit hard by flooding from the Budameru Canal. The canal, which flows from Khammam district through Krishna district into Vijayawada, and eventually into Kolleru Lake, became a nightmare for the residents.

It took just 20 minutes for the Budameru’s waters to flood specific areas of the city, causing extensive damage. Each affected household suffered losses of up to Rs. 2 lakh. The severity of this flood was unprecedented, and many were caught off guard.

Residents, devastated by the flood damage, became increasingly frustrated with the government’s inability to control the situation and the lack of cooperation from some officials. Tensions escalated as people vented their anger at the government, officials, and ministers who seemed unable to mitigate the disaster effectively.

Amidst this crisis, CBN stepped in with a focused approach to restore confidence among the people. He personally surveyed the flooded areas and visited remote locations affected by the floods without hesitation. One of his top priorities was to address the breaches in the Budameru Canal, working toward filling the three major breaches as a short-term solution to prevent further flooding.

In addition, Naidu directed the government to deploy fire engines across Vijayawada to help clean the more than one lakh houses filled with thick mud left by the floodwaters. This decision was welcomed by the people, as it alleviated the immense burden of cleaning their homes. Fire engines were even used to clean vehicles buried in the mud, adding further relief.

Moreover, the government provided aid to affected families in the form of essential kits, including 25 kg of rice, vegetables, fruits, and bottled water. This immediate assistance was part of Naidu’s strategy to regain the trust of the people and address their needs in the aftermath of the flood.
