The Chevella accident claimed 20 lives and injured 20 others. The situation was even worse for those trapped inside the bus, waiting to be rescued as every minute passed in panic and pain.
When a concrete tipper rammed into the bus, heavy concrete slabs fell inside, crushing several passengers. Among them was Jayasudha, a math teacher from Tolkatta welfare school, who was stuck waist-deep in debris before being rescued.
Four other teachers who were meant to travel with her missed that bus and escaped the tragedy. Jayasudha, with swollen legs, was later shifted to NIMs for treatment.
Rescue teams described the condition of those trapped in concrete as horrifying. Bodies of the deceased were handed over to families, while the injured were treated in hospitals around Chevella. Initially, they were to be moved to Osmania Hospital.
Four medical teams from Osmania and Gandhi hospitals were deployed to Chevella Community Health Center. A control room has also been set up in Chevella mandal to coordinate rescue and relief operations.
State Congress incharge Meenakshi Natarajan expressed shock over the accident, while AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi demanded a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash.
