Hijra Problem: Hyd Police In Action, Much Needed!

Hyderabad Police counsel transgender leaders

For a long time, there have been complaints about incidents involving some members of the transgender community allegedly demanding money from the public. Such incidents have often led to concerns over harassment and money extortion in public places.

Recently, a similar incident came to light involving a family celebrating their housewarming ceremony. The family had worked hard to buy their own home and had gathered to celebrate the occasion with their loved ones.

A video showing a group of transgender people allegedly demanding ₹50,000 from the family went viral on social media. The incident triggered strong reactions from the public and led to widespread criticism.

Several people tagged the Hyderabad Police and the DGP on social media. They demanded immediate action against those involved and called for steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The DGP had already reacted to the matter. Now, action has reportedly been initiated on the ground, with the Hyderabad Police starting a counselling process for members of the transgender community.

Cyberabad Police called elders and leaders from transgender communities residing within its limits. A counselling session was then conducted for them.

During the session, they were advised not to harass members of the public or shop owners for money. The police also stressed the need to avoid such incidents and maintain public order.

However, the effectiveness of the action will depend on what happens beyond the counselling session. It remains to be seen whether Hyderabad Police can ensure corrective action on the ground and prevent similar incidents in the future.
