Calgary police arrested a father and son on charges of sexually exploiting teenage girls who were not able to legally consent, as the age of consent in Canada is 16. Several teenage girls were exploited by providing alcohol, drugs, and vapes to them.
It all began with a 13-year-old girl who went missing and set the police into action. During their investigation, they found that the girl was lured by alcohol, drugs, and vapes in exchange for sex. They have found that one Sumrit Walia, 24, and his father, Gurpratap Singh Walia, 56, exploited many teenage girls.
In the case of the 13-year-old girl, she told the officers that she was in love with a 24-year-old man, which led to her falling into their trap. The incidents happened between December 2022 and May 2023. The father-son duo owned Haddon Convenience Store at 208, Haddon Road SW and the adjoining Premier Liquor, Wine & Spirits.
The officers arrested the two men after a search warrant was issued at a house in the northwest community of Panorama Hills. The police seized 975 gms of cocaine and seven handguns. They also seized a computer with child pornography, drugs, drug paraphernalia, contraband tobacco, vape cartridges, and collapsible batons.
Both of them have been charged under multiple counts each. Meanwhile, the victims are being supported by the Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.
