Modi’s Cricket Praise Seen as Insensitive

Modi cricket tweet sparks controversy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted about India’s cricket win against Pakistan, calling it #OperationSindoor on the games field and congratulating the players. While his intention seemed to celebrate the team, many people have reacted negatively to the tweet.

The reason lies in the phrase “Operation Sindoor.” This was the official name of an Indian military operation in the Maldives in 2023, where Indian soldiers were sent to help restore order during a political crisis. Using the same term to describe a cricket victory has struck many as inappropriate.

Trollers say the tweet trivializes a real military mission and makes it sound like a battle, when it was actually a sports event. Some feel it politicizes cricket and comes across as tone-deaf. Several celebrities and social media users have mocked the tweet, sharing jokes and memes about the unusual comparison.

Others feel that Modi should not have tweeted at all. They argue that it legitimizes playing against Pakistan and gives the BCCI a public clean chit. Of course, the BCCI does not take major cricket decisions independent of the government or Modi, but critics say there was no need for the Prime Minister to comment publicly on this matter.

In short, while Modi aimed to celebrate India’s cricket win against Pakistan, the choice of words and the very act of tweeting ended up drawing more attention than the game itself.
