
The judgement has come on the Obulapuram mining case. The Nampally CBI Court has given the final judgement. While five of the accused will get punishment, two have been identified as innocent.

Already one person accused is dead. In 2022, IAS Srilakshmi was discharged by the Telangana High Court.
Mines Secretary at the time Krupanand and Sabita Indra Reddy got clean chits. Incidentally, Sabita Indra Reddy was the mining minister between 2004 and 2009.

The accused in the Obulapuram mining case include OMC Company’s Gali Janardhan Reddy, BV Srinivas Reddy, Director of Mines Department at the time VD Venugopal and Gali PA Mefaz Ali Khan. A1 Srinivas Reddy and Gali Janardhan Reddy have been sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment in the illegal mining case.
The case was going on for the past 15 years and the final judgement was given on Tuesday. All the four accused will have to serve term for 7 years in jail. The Court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused.

Going back, the Obulapuram mining scam involves illegal iron ore mining and massive tax evasion. Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) was owned by the influential and powerful Reddy brothers including former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and their close associate, Karnataka Health Minister, B Sriramulu.
Investigations have revealed that OMC entered into an MoU with a Singapore-based shell company. The shell company had offices in tax havens like Singapore, Dubai and the British Virgin Islands.
The shell company was partly handled by Janardhan Reddy. Due to their scheme, huge amounts of money were evaded leading to losses to the government.
The CBI launched a probe in 2009 and found money laundering worth crores of rupees after being directed by the Central and combined AP governments.
