Congress leader Rahul Gandhi escaped unhurt after several vehicles travelling in his convoy collided on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, October 26. The accident occurred while he was travelling to Sultanpur to attend a court hearing in a defamation case.
The collision took place near Haliyapur in Sultanpur district at around 10.15 am. Reports said five vehicles and an ambulance were involved in the accident. Rahul Gandhi’s vehicle was not affected.
According to police, a vehicle travelling with local Congress leaders suddenly applied the brakes, causing vehicles behind it to collide. Some initial reports said Congress workers and security personnel suffered minor injuries, although police subsequently reported no major injuries.
Rahul Gandhi had arrived at Lucknow airport earlier in the morning before leaving for Sultanpur by road. Following the minor accident, the convoy resumed its journey towards the court.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi received relief in the 2018 criminal defamation case, with a special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur acquitting him on Monday.
The case was filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about Amit Shah during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election campaign. Gandhi had allegedly referred to Shah as an accused in a murder case, despite Shah having been discharged in the relevant case by a special CBI court.
The court dismissed the defamation case after hearing the matter. Gandhi had denied the allegations and maintained that the complaint was politically motivated.
The day therefore saw two separate developments involving Rahul Gandhi: a minor convoy collision in which he remained safe, followed by his acquittal in the long-pending defamation case.
