Telangana government under Revanth Reddy has suffered a major legal setback in the Supreme Court. The Apex Court dismissed the Special Leave Petition that challenged the High Court’s order. The court insisted that local body elections must go ahead without breaching the 50 % reservation ceiling.
Despite much fanfare about 42 % BC reservation and promises tied to the caste census, the government’s plan has fizzled out. Opposition parties are now questioning how a GO was passed when norms clearly cap reservations at 50 %. The High Court had earlier upheld the 50 % limit for state decisions.
Revanth Reddy’s government had challenged that judgment in the Supreme Court, only to be turned down. Political analysts now call the promise of 42 % BC reservation a political sham. With local elections on the horizon, the ruling party may face severe backlash.
