The Telangana government is preparing to repair the three damaged barrages of the Kaleswaram lift irrigation project. The barrages on the Godavari river Annaram, Sundilla, and Medigadda were damaged earlier due to heavy rains.
The Kaleswaram project has long been a flashpoint between the BRS and the ruling Congress. After coming to power, the Revanth Reddy government ordered a single-man commission to probe financial irregularities and poor construction quality.
The PC Ghose commission earlier held KCR responsible for irregularities, calling him the “karta, karma, kriya” of the issue. The matter has now been handed over to the CBI, though the agency has not released any updates yet.
Following an inspection by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), the state government has decided to take up repair works. On Wednesday, it invited designs and drawings from reputed firms for rehabilitation of the three barrages.
The proposals must be submitted in sealed covers by October 15 and will be opened the same day at 5 pm. With local body elections approaching, the Congress faces criticism and embarrassment, since it had earlier blamed KCR entirely for the collapse.
