Cases of fraud involving NRIs coming to India for marriage have been on the rise. NRIs may deceive or exploit their prospective spouses for various reasons, including dowry, immigration fraud, financial fraud, or even human trafficking.
Telangana has become the third state with a high number of such fraudulent NRI marriages after Gujarat and Punjab, often driven by the desire to migrate to foreign countries. According to a petition filed, more than 320 complaints have been filed against fraud by NRI grooms between 2019 and 2022.
Families frequently fail to perform fundamental background checks on NRIs because they are too distracted by the opportunity. In these cases, most of the time there is abandonment by their spouses, a lack of information regarding their whereabouts, discovering that their partners were already married, or being deceived with false information about their income.
It is important to verify the background of the person, register the legal marriage, stay in touch with the daughter after marriage, and create an environment where she feels comfortable sharing problems.
Families should also be aware of the laws in the country where their daughters are marrying, as extradition of cheating spouses is often impossible.
