Telangana Tops Liquor Consumption

Telangana liquor consumption statistics report

Liquor consumption has seen a visible rise across South India in recent years. As a result, state revenues from alcohol sales have increased sharply. Telangana currently tops the list, according to reports by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and the excise department.

The average alcohol consumption per person in Telangana stands at 4.44 litres. Karnataka follows closely with 4.25 litres. Tamil Nadu records 3.38 litres, Andhra Pradesh 2.71 litres, and Kerala 2.53 litres per person.

Reports indicate that alcohol consumption in Telangana is higher in villages than in cities. Beer consumption is also notably high across the state. These trends point to changing drinking patterns in rural areas.

Spending on liquor is highest in Telangana among southern states. An average individual spends Rs 11,351 annually on alcohol. In Andhra Pradesh, the per person spending is Rs 6,399.

The Telangana government is estimated to earn around Rs 36,000 crore in revenue from liquor sales. While this strengthens the state’s finances, experts have raised serious concerns about the long term impact.

Health specialists warn that rising alcohol expenditure leads to financial stress and health deterioration. The figures show consumption levels far higher than neighbouring states. Experts say this trend is worrying and needs immediate attention.
