Jail Sentence for IPS Officer in Dhoni’s Case

MS Dhoni opens up on his ascent to captaincy ten years ago.

The Madras High Court sentenced retired IPS officer G Sampath Kumar to 15 days of simple imprisonment in a contempt of court lawsuit filed by former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who accused Kumar of making derogatory comments about both the Supreme Court and the Madras HC.

The origins of this case trace back to 2014 when Dhoni filed a defamation suit worth Rs 100 crore against Kumar. This legal action was prompted by allegations from Kumar, who was initially involved in handling the 2013 IPL betting case. Kumar’s claims linked Dhoni to the scandal.

The bench, in its ruling, highlighted that Sampath Kumar had deliberately attempted to scandalize and undermine the authority of both the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court.
