A few months back, Congress leader Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy vowed to prevent any BRS candidates from securing a foothold in the joint Khammam district. His pledge nearly came to fruition as the Congress party secured victory in nine out of ten seats within the Khammam district.
The ten constituencies within the joint Khammam district—Khammam, Palair, Yellandu, Kothagudem, Bhadrachalam, Pinapaka, Wyra, Madhira, Sathupally, and Aswaraopeta—saw the BRS clinching only Bhadrachalam. Additionally, Congress’s ally, CPI, emerged victorious in the Kothagudem constituency.
Khammam has long been a stronghold for the Congress party. Moreover, the recent defections of Thummala and Ponguleti from BRS to Congress played a pivotal role in rejuvenating Congress’s influence in the district.
