In a remarkable move, the Telangana state government has unveiled the Mahalakshmi scheme, offering cost-free travel to girls, women, and transgender individuals on RTC (Telangana State Road Transport Corporation) buses. Initiated as one of Congress party’s electoral promises, this scheme is a pivotal step towards women’s empowerment and enhancing public transport.
Effective from Saturday afternoon, this initiative encompasses free travel for women on Pallevelugu, Express, City Ordinary, and Metro Express buses. The state government will bear the entire fare, reinforcing safety and accessibility for women passengers.
RTC MD Sajjanar disclosed guidelines for this groundbreaking scheme, scheduled to launch at the Assembly premises, with the participation of women ministers, MLAs, and employees. The move aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce accidents, and curb pollution by encouraging public transport usage, particularly benefiting women while fostering sustainability. This scheme’s future expansion is under review to meet passenger demands, utilizing around 200 existing services initially.
