If someone thinks that making fun of someone’s disability in the name of humor is okay, it’s not. A recent incident on Twitter involved a guy getting into serious trouble for mocking a disabled girl.
The incident occurred when a Twitter user shared a photo of a disabled girl receiving an award from the president. Since she couldn’t physically take the award, a guy tried to make fun of it by sharing her photos and writing, “kitni arrogant ladki hai, president award de rahi hain aur wo le nahi rahi.”
The comment was not only insensitive but also disrespectful. As a consequence, people took valid offense and filed a complaint, mentioning the complete incident, including an FIR against the individual and the account.
Every now and then, we see such disrespectful comments against people who, in any way, lack physical abilities. Recently, a meme with the “Moye Moye” song was trending on Instagram, based on disrespecting people who don’t have hands.
While some argue under the shadow of freedom of speech, claiming they can say anything without repercussions, it’s a notion that urgently needs to be changed.
