Competition and the pressure of climbing up the hierarchy to prove one’s potential is a brutal but real scenario for the Indian education system. Students go through a process of extreme stress and pressure for the Board’s examination that determine the academic excellence of a student.
The council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (ISCE) has decided not to publish the merit list for 10th and 12th grade examinations starting this year. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a similar decision last year. This initiative intends to decrease the academic pressure for students and remove the unhealthy competition that adda no value to one’s personal growth.
The authorities have addressed the problem of toxic competitive behaviors amongst students and the unhealthy amount of hardwork and stress the parents make them go through. This entire decision will help create a better learning environment for students. Chief Executive and Secretary Joseph Emmanuel explained why this was an absolutely necessary decision and this would remove the unhealthy competition.
The ultimate aim of education cannot be limited to a rank list provided by one single exam. Similarly the growth of mind requires more emphasis on logical thinking and conceptualization than rote learning. This decision to not publish the meritlist might seem unfair to the excelling students but in a long run it will be beneficial to all.
