Support For Unemployed; But Why?

Unemployed Youth

There has been a long standing debate about the unemployment funds that various governments across the world provide to its out of job citizens. Politicians have argued for long if it is ethical to do so or not. But one thing we can all agree upon is that such a scheme should never humiliate an individual rather than uplifting them. The Karnataka government has introduced unemployment funds for youth in the state but the details suggest it is of no good for anyone.

The government, delivering on a pre-poll promise, disbursed checks to 2500 individuals. The beneficiaries received a meager ₹1500 if they hold a high school degree and ₹3000 if they are graduates. This is a monthly scheme aimed at providing financial assistance to the youth facing unemployment.

A total of 70,000 individuals have been identified eligible for the scheme. But the concern lies in the amount of money given to them. ₹1500 is a very insignificant amount of money considering the present economy and could barely cover the LPG expense of a household.

Comparing such a scheme with an unemployment fund would be an insult. The government’s intent to provide financial assistance to the unemployed youth should be appreciated but the implementation of it could’ve been in a more practical way that could actually help those who need it.
