BCCI Drops Bombshell on Indian Legends!

Ajit Agarkar on Kohli and Rohit’s 2027 plans

The Indian cricket team is once again in the spotlight as they prepare to face Australia in a three-match ODI series with Shubman Gill leading the side. However, the real buzz is around two legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Both former captains have returned to international cricket after a break of more than seven months. Their comeback, marking their first appearance since taking a break from Test and T20 internationals, has set the cricket world talking.

Focus on the Present, Not 2027

With the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup still two years away, the question arises will Kohli and Rohit remain part of India’s long-term plans? Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed this during the NDTV World Summit 2025.

He clarified that the team is currently focused on the present. “We’ll make a call closer to the 2027 World Cup,” Agarkar stated, dismissing the idea that the ongoing series would decide their future.

Not on Probation

Agarkar also stressed that Kohli and Rohit are not playing on a trial basis. “It’s not the case that if they don’t score in this series, that’s it, or if they score three hundreds, they’re automatically set for 2027. It’s a long way off,” he said.

India is scheduled to play 27 ODIs before the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The team will also face key challenges against South Africa, England, and Australia  vital matches for their preparation.

Kohli and Rohit’s Record in Australia

For both Kohli and Rohit, this series holds special importance. Kohli last played an ODI in Australia five years ago, while Rohit’s last ODI there was six years back.

Their track records against Australia are remarkable. Kohli has scored eight ODI centuries against them, three of which were in Australia. Rohit also has eight hundreds, four of them in Australian conditions.

Legendary ODI Careers

Both players are among the greatest ODI batsmen ever. Kohli has amassed 14,181 runs in 302 matches, ranking third on the all-time ODI list. Rohit has 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs, placing him among the top ten run-getters in the format’s history.

Agarkar’s statement reflects India’s evolving cricket mindset balancing respect for veterans with the need to build a strong future-ready squad. The emphasis is on team stability rather than individual performances.

Respect for Experience

Agarkar also praised the respect Kohli and Rohit command in the dressing room. “Legacy cricketers have earned that legacy themselves. You’d rather have such experienced players performing well. Some conversations with them don’t come out, but there is nothing but respect,” he said.

Earlier, Agarkar had denied reports suggesting that Kohli and Rohit were planning to retire from ODIs. He confirmed that both players passed fitness tests and remain committed to the format.

Gambhir Backs the Duo

Head coach Gautam Gambhir echoed similar thoughts. “The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It’s important to stay in the present. Their experience will be a big asset in Australia. Hopefully, both will have a good tour,” he remarked.

Looking Ahead

The Indian think tank’s message is clear Kohli and Rohit remain integral to the ODI setup for now. Their inclusion for the 2027 World Cup will depend on long-term team goals rather than short-term performances.

For fans, the series is a treat, with two modern-day greats back in action. For Ajit Agarkar, it’s about balancing experience and youth while keeping an eye on the bigger picture.

As of now, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continue to have plenty to offer, with their legacy guiding the next chapter of Indian cricket.
