The BCCI has asked the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to clarify his future plans regarding cricket after the Champions Trophy, scheduled to commence on 19th February.
The board had to take this step due to a couple of reasons. The first reason is Rohit’s poor ongoing form in Test cricket, as evident from his performance against New Zealand at home as well as in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

The other reason is the skipper’s age. The management wants to initiate a smooth transition process, as Rohit will be almost 40 by the time the 2027 ODI World Cup begins in South Africa.
A source close to the BCCI revealed, “The selectors and people in the board had this discussion with Rohit around the time of the last selection meeting. He has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy…

…The team management has certain plans going into the next World Test Championship cycle and the ODI World Cup. They want to ensure everyone is on the same page for a smoother transition.”
Several names have already been put forward as options that can lead the Indian team into the future, with Shubhman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah taking the lead.

Another source claimed, “Bumrah’s chances of a long Test series or completing a full season will always be in doubt. The selectors may want a more stable option. Gill has been seen as a captaincy prospect but his returns in Test cricket have been average…
…Rishabh Pant could also be a strong candidate and maybe someone like Yashashvi Jaiswal can be groomed for the role.”
With nothing certain as of now, it will be interesting to see what steps the BCCI takes next to ensure that Indian cricket witnesses a smooth transition of captaincy.
