The BCCI is reportedly considering a major change in India’s T20I setup. According to recent reports, Suryakumar Yadav could lose the T20I captaincy, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the leading candidate for the role.
The reports have surprised many cricket fans. Suryakumar recently guided India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title. India also remained unbeaten in T20I series under his leadership after he succeeded Rohit Sharma.
Despite the strong results, selectors are reportedly focusing on current form, fitness, and long-term planning. Shreyas Iyer has impressed many with his captaincy for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026.
On the other hand, Suryakumar has struggled with the bat this season for Mumbai Indians. He has managed only 195 runs in 10 matches so far. Reports also suggest he has been dealing with a wrist injury for some time.
The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar is reportedly concerned about his recent performances. There are also discussions about whether Suryakumar should continue in the T20I side purely as a specialist batter.
The BCCI is also said to be planning a transition phase during the upcoming Ireland and England tours after IPL 2026. Young players could get more opportunities during this period.
Even though Suryakumar still has one of India’s strongest T20 captaincy records, the management reportedly believes Shreyas Iyer currently offers better balance in terms of form, fitness, and future planning.
Fans have also praised Shreyas Iyer’s calm leadership style this season. Many supporters believe “Sarpanch” is now ready for a bigger role in Indian cricket once again.
Interestingly, Shreyas has not played a T20I for India since December 2023. However, his strong IPL 2026 campaign has pushed him back into the national captaincy conversation.
