Hardik Pandya is going through a challenging phase ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. While his value in white-ball cricket remains undisputed, his recurring fitness concerns have once again become a major topic within Indian cricket circles.
Hardik recently missed a few IPL matches for Mumbai Indians due to a back injury. Since then, discussions have intensified about whether he can maintain fitness consistently, especially in ODI cricket where an all-rounder must contribute with both bat and ball.
According to reports, the BCCI and selectors reviewed India’s long-term plans during the IPL season. Hardik’s fitness condition reportedly became one of the key discussion points during those internal conversations. The concern is not about his batting ability but mainly about his bowling workload.
The Indian team management is reportedly seeking clarity on whether Hardik can regularly complete his full quota of 10 overs in ODI cricket. This has now emerged as the biggest challenge for him before India’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup gather momentum.
Reports suggest Hardik has been focusing on recovery and rehabilitation at training centres in Mumbai after missing matches. Although he has resumed practice sessions, the selectors are expected to monitor his workload carefully over the coming months.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has reportedly indicated that fitness will remain an important factor in future selections. India does not want another situation where a crucial player struggles to complete matches because of injury-related issues.
At the same time, selectors are also observing younger players who can provide balance to the squad. Cricketers like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana are gradually entering discussions as possible backup options for the future.
Despite the concerns, Hardik continues to be one of India’s biggest match-winners in white-ball cricket. However, over the next year, fitness could become just as important as performance. His bowling workload and physical condition may ultimately decide his role in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
