India’s 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland has sparked a major debate over the absence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from the playing XI. Despite his outstanding recent form, the young batter did not get a chance to make his international debut during the series.
The 15-year-old arrived on the tour after an impressive IPL 2026 season and strong performances for India A. Many believed the Ireland series was the ideal opportunity to introduce him to international cricket. However, he remained on the bench throughout the tour.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar questioned the team management’s decision. He believes Sooryavanshi should have played in Ireland and deserves a place in the playing XI from the opening match of the England T20I series. Gavaskar also suggested using him at No. 3 if the opening combination remains unchanged.
Former India batter Mohammed Kaif also criticised the decision. He said that if the selectors are planning for the future, a player in such exceptional form should not be left waiting. According to Kaif, the selection approach has lacked consistency.
Ravichandran Ashwin offered a different perspective. He believes Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have earned their places as specialist T20 players. In his view, Sooryavanshi’s opportunity will come if there is an injury or a dip in form.
The debate is unlikely to end anytime soon. With the England T20I series beginning on July 1, attention will be on India’s team selection. Fans will be eager to see whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finally gets his long-awaited international debut or has to wait a little longer.
