Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has backed young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi despite backlash following his recent performances.
Srikkanth said the 15 year old has the talent to become a major player for India in the future and should not be judged based on one disappointing series.
The former India captain believes Sooryavanshi has a rare ability to attract fans and score runs quickly. He also feels the youngster’s journey should not stop at T20 cricket and that he has the ability to succeed in ODIs and Test cricket as well.
Srikkanth added that if Vaibhav makes a strong impact in the longest format, he could help revive interest in Test cricket among fans.
His comments come after Sooryavanshi struggled during the India A tour of Sri Lanka. The youngster failed to match the form that made him one of the biggest talking points of the IPL season.
Despite, Srikkanth said such setbacks are normal for young players and urged people to be patient.
He also welcomed Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Ireland and England.
Srikkanth feels being around the senior team will help the teenager understand international cricket better, even if he does not immediately make the playing XI.
For Srikkanth, Sooryavanshi is not just a T20 prospect. The former India captain believes the teenager has the potential to shine in ODIs and Test cricket and become one of India’s biggest stars.
