Virat Kohli and Wasim Jaffer Test debate

Kohli announced his Test retirement on May 12, 2025, just days before India’s five match England tour. The decision came five days after Rohit Sharma also retired from Test cricket, leaving Indian cricket fans surprised by the sudden exit of two senior batters.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer suggested that Kohli may have been unhappy with the way the situation was handled.

He said the former India captain could have continued playing Test cricket and was preparing for the England tour before announcing his decision.

It felt like Virat was a bit bitter about the way he was treated, Jaffer said. He also pointed out that Kohli’s popularity brings fans to stadiums, adding that the batter could have played more Test cricket.

Despite, Jaffer made it clear that the real reason behind Kohli’s retirement would only be known if Kohli himself explained it.

Kohli finished his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches, including 30 centuries. Jaffer’s comments have now raised fresh questions about the way India handled the exit of one of its biggest Test stars.

Was Kohli ready to move on, or could the situation have been handled differently? For now, Jaffer has shared his view, but Kohli’s own explanation remains the missing piece.
