Rishabh Pant’s return to Delhi Capitals has brought the captaincy question back into focus, but former India opener Wasim Jaffer believes the wicketkeeper batter should stay away from the leadership role.
Rishabh Pant returned to Delhi after Lucknow Super Giants traded him back to his former franchise. He had spent the previous two IPL seasons with LSG after being bought for Rs 27 crore.
Rishabh Pant also led Lucknow, but Jaffer feels his priority now should be his batting.
If Delhi Capitals offers him the captaincy, he should say no. I think it would be better if he plays as a player because his performance has declined, Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
The former India opener believes Rishabh Pant needs to focus on scoring runs rather than taking another captaincy responsibility.
Rishabh Pant’s place in India’s white ball setup is also something he needs to fight for, according to Wasim Jaffer.
I think Pant’s priority will be to do well in the IPL and make a comeback in India’s ODI and T20 teams, he said.
Wasim Jaffer also has a clear choice for Delhi’s captaincy if Rishabh Pant does not take the role.
He backed KL Rahul, who also moved from Lucknow to Delhi and has previous IPL captaincy experience. Rahul is currently India’s Test vice captain.
Rishabh Pant’s return to Delhi will therefore come with an important question. Will he take charge again, or focus completely on getting back to his best with the bat?
