Bad Girl

The day before yesterday, the teaser of Bad Girl, a low-budget Kollywood movie with debut actors presented by Vetri Maaran and Anurag Kashyap, was released and has sparked a hot debate on social media.

Bad Girl, directed by debutant Varsha Bharath, is a coming-of-age drama focusing on women’s equality in the current societal context. The teaser indicates that the film addresses many taboo topics, with the lead female character being portrayed as a Brahmin.

This has sparked controversy, especially among right-wing groups, who have been criticizing the women director Varsha Bharath and Vetri Maaran, urging that such movies should not be encouraged.

On the other hand, left-wing groups, accusing people of hypocrisy, have pointed out that those celebrating movies like Animal are offended by Bad Girl.

Despite tackling bold, taboo topics, the trailer includes a scene where the lead character blackmails her mother with suicide if she isn’t allowed to live the way she wishes.

Many general audience members have pointed out this scene, criticizing it as irresponsible. They argue that it sets a bad example for current-generation kids and students. While the director may have intended a certain message, critics believe that socially responsible figures like Vetri Maaran should have suggested removing such a scene.
