There were decent expectations for Epic. At the very least, audiences expected a passable one-time watch from Aditya Hasan, mainly because of the goodwill and nostalgia created by his 90s web series.
But, ironically, Epic turned out to be an epic disappointment.
The film’s fate became clear on day one itself, right from the US premieres.
The web reviews, social media talk, and theatre occupancy all indicated where it was headed.
Amid all this, there is an important lesson for budding filmmakers, especially those who are too stubborn to accept feedback and believe they know everything.
Producer Naga Vamsi openly expressed his disappointment, saying that Aditya Hasan did not accept even basic feedback because he felt his creative space was being disturbed.
Cut to the film’s release, and he has delivered an ultra-boring and largely meaningless take on a live-in relationship.
For a director with just one web series behind him to display such an attitude raises serious questions about where his career is headed.
We live in a time when plenty of feedback is available. Some of it may be misleading, but valuable feedback certainly exists, especially when it comes from experienced people or credible critics.
Filmmakers should consider it for their own benefit. Otherwise, they risk delivering a film like Epic, with Aditya Hasan’s career now at a crossroads.
