Living in the United States is a dream for many Indians. The attraction of a better living condition and more opportunities drives thousands of Indians to immigrate to the USA. However, not everyone gets to realize this dream because of non-approval of Visa or extremely high waiting period. But there are many who are undeterred by these hiccups and wouldn’t mind living in the States as an illegal.
Illegal immigration of Indians to the USA grew sharply in the last few years and the numbers are surprising. The Ministry of External Affairs released data about the illegal Indian immigrants encountered by the authorities in the USA. According to this data, a total of 200,760 illegal Indian immigrants were registered in the system in the last 5 years.
If we compare the numbers over the years, we realize that this is a growing problem which started rising in the aftermath of COVID. Between 2018-19, 8027 immigrants were processed and in 2020-21, this number grew to 30,662.
The highest number of illegals were encountered in 2022-23 when the number reached 96,917. The Ministry said that whenever there is a case of illegal migration, the state police department is informed to investigate further into the case.
