Australia is one of the top destinations where Indian students fly every year to pursue higher studies. However, students who aspire to fly to Australia will now face a setback as the country has decided to limit its intake of foreign students.

The Australian government has decided to cap the number of foreign students at 2,70,000 in 2025 as part of efforts to control migration.

According to this policy, the government will issue student visas to 145,000 for universities and 95,000 for the skills training sector.

In 2023, more than 600,000 student visas were approved in Australia, which is significantly higher than the intake in any previous year.

Meanwhile, universities across the country are opposing this move, arguing that limiting student intake would severely harm the education sector.

Universities Australia Chair David Lloyd expressed that limiting student intake would put a “handbrake” on the education sector. He stated that migration controls should not be imposed at the expense of one single sector, especially one as important as the education sector.

Reports indicate that support for migration in Australia has fallen to its lowest level in five years. It is believed that this will leave a negative impression on the country.




Not only Australia, but countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands are also considering or implementing measures targeting the university sector to control migration.
