Australia is one of the popular destinations for Indian students who wish to study abroad. The country has seen a big surge in students intake since the onset of Covid.

However, Australia has now started to work on imposing new visa restrictions in an attempt to halve its annual international student intake. The decision comes after net immigration clocked a record 510,000 in 2022-23.

Australia now vows to impose restrictive measures for international students like demanding higher grades in English proficiency tests and increased scrutiny on second visa applicants to extend their stays.

The idea is to cut down the international student and migrant intake to 250,000 in 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said in a statement that his move is to resurrect the “broken” immigration system in the country.

This should come as disappointing news to Indian students who wish to go to Australia for higher studies and job opportunities. There will be stringent measures in place to cut down the intake.
