Ban on Immigrant Student Families!

Families Banned For Students UK

The UK Home Office has implemented measures aimed at reducing migration in 2024, particularly affecting international students. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took to Twitter to announce that the majority of foreign university students would no longer be allowed to bring their families to the UK as dependants.

The Home Office emphasized its commitment to a significant reduction in migration, specifying that new overseas students, with exceptions for postgraduate research or government-funded scholarship students, would be prohibited from bringing family members.

This decision has a significant impact on Indian students, who experienced a 54 percent increase in sponsored study visas in 2023. Notably, 42 percent of Indian students obtained visa extensions after completing their studies, primarily through the Graduate Route.

The decision is expected to impact Indian students significantly, altering enrollment patterns and potentially affecting mental well-being for being left alone without family. The shift may also have social, cultural, and diplomatic consequences, influencing international relations.

These policies, effective from July 17, 2023, also restrict international students from switching to work visas before completing their courses. Sunak defends these measures as necessary for managing immigration levels and ensuring UK’s benefit.
