F-1 Warning: Jobs Allowed During Summer Break?

F-1 students don’t get too comfortable this summer. Many are still falling into the trap of working off-campus during summer break, thinking that the rules only apply when they attend classes.

However, that is still illegal unless you’re approved for Day 1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT (Optional Practical Training). F-1 rules don’t magically relax just because classes are out. Unauthorized work can lead to detention or even deportation.

If you do have CPT and are taking an internship course for credit, yes, you can legally work 40 hours a week, even while taking classes. But this still doesn’t apply to unauthorized jobs. The warning is aimed at those trying to sneak in off-campus gigs without any official approval.

With the current US crackdown against F-1 students going in full swing, it is best to follow these rules religiously as even minor overwork or infractions in your record could land you in serious trouble. If you are unsure of anything speak to your advisor or a lawyer.
