An Indian Origin woman from Australia killed herself last week frustrated over a custody battle she was fighting against the Australian authorities for her teenage son and daughter. This incident has highlighted other instances where the parents lost custody of their child citing neglect in care.
The woman had been fighting for custody for a long time but the authorities responded only after the death of the woman. The authorities have said that the children are in custody of their father. They are still doing a final assessment before handing in full custody. The incident has sparked an outrage over the delay caused by the Australian authorities that led to the death of the woman.
The family had asked the officials to assess the woman’s in-laws and the maternal grandparents in India to ensure there is no further delay in the judgment.
People are trying to bring to light how Indians and South Asians face persecution by the child services because of cultural differences when they migrate to Western countries. There is a demand for the Minister of External Affairs to intervene in such cases.
